What Is the Compass Associate Portal (CAP)?

CAP — also called ESS (Employee Self-Service) — is Compass Group’s internal HR portal for all US hourly associates and salaried employees. It connects paystubs, schedules, tax forms, benefits, and personal profile management under one login.

How to Log In to the Compass Associate Portal

Standard login takes under 60 seconds. Here is the exact sequence including what your username actually looks like.

Open a browser and navigate to:

👤 Format 1 — Personnel Number

Most hourly associates. Your employee ID number. Found on paystub, onboarding paperwork, or from your manager.

Example: 123456

📧 Format 2 — Compass Network ID

Some salaried employees. Your employee number followed by @compassassociate.com.

Example: 90000009@compassassociate.com

Enter username, then click Continue.

💡Try your 6-digit personnel number first. If it fails, ask HR for your Compass Network ID email format.

How to Register for CAP (New Employee Checklist)

Before you start, gather these 5 items. You cannot complete registration without all of them.

Choose Registration Method
Option 1 (Personnel Number) works for 95% of employees

✅ Option 1 — Personnel Number (Recommended)

Select United States, enter Personnel Number, leave Clocking ID blank, click Next. Use this if you have a paystub or your manager gave you an employee number.

⚠ Option 2 — Clocking ID (MySTAFF Only)

Use ONLY if you clock in/out using MySTAFF or Compass Time clock terminals. If you don’t know what a Clocking ID is, use Option 1.

Verify Your Identity
Confirms you are an active Compass employee
  • Birth month — enter number only (e.g., 3 for March, 11 for November)
  • Last 4 digits of SSN
  • First letter of last name (capital or lowercase accepted)
If this step fails, your Personnel Number or identity details may not match HR records. Contact on-site HR to verify your file before trying again. New hires should wait 48–72 hours after starting for records to fully process.

Enter Your Contact Details
Email is required — this is where all reset emails go

The system may show an email already on file — confirm it is correct or enter your personal email. Phone number is optional but speeds up account recovery.

⚠ Use a personal email — not a work email. If your employment ends, you lose access to your work email but still need to download W-2s and paystubs for tax purposes.

Complete Setup via Email Link
Check inbox within 5 minutes of submitting

Check inbox for a welcome email from Compass Group. Click “Complete Account Setup”. Then:

  • Create a secure password (minimum 8 characters, mix letters and numbers)
  • Set up 3 security questions — choose answers you’ll actually remember
  • Click Continue to finalize
📧Email not in inbox after 5 minutes? Check spam/junk folder. The setup link expires in 24 hours. If expired, restart registration or contact HR.

Log In for the First Time
Your account is now active

Go to ess.compassassociate.com and log in with Personnel Number + your new password.

First login checklist: Verify your address in My Profile · Confirm direct deposit bank account · Add emergency contact · Download a test paystub to confirm access.

04 — Paystubs

How to View and Download Paystubs

The most-used feature in CAP. Most direct deposits appear in the portal before the money hits your bank account.

Log In and Navigate to Pay
Via CAP dashboard or ESS Mobility top menu

Log in at ess.compassassociate.com. Click the Pay or Paystubs tile on the dashboard. On mobile (ESS Mobility), tap More → Paystubs from the bottom menu.

Select the Pay Period
Most recent first — scroll for older stubs

A list of pay periods appears sorted by most recent first. Click the date range you need. Compass Group pays bi-weekly (every two weeks) for most hourly associates.

💡For a loan or housing application, most lenders want the 2–3 most recent paystubs. Download all of them in one session to save time.

Open and Save the PDF
Store locally — don’t rely on the portal indefinitely

Click View Paystub. The stub opens as a PDF. Use your browser’s download button or File → Save As to save to your device or cloud storage.

⚠ Important: Older paystubs may become inaccessible after they’re archived. Download and locally store any paystub you might need for taxes, loans, or lease renewals.

05 — W-2 Tax Forms

How to Download Your W-2 from CAP

W-2 forms are available in CAP by January 31 each year. You do not need to wait for the paper copy in the mail.

Log In and Open PeopleHub
W-2s are in PeopleHub, not the main Pay tab

Log in at ess.compassassociate.com. From the dashboard, click the PeopleHub tile. If you see “Employee Central” instead, that is the same thing.

💡If neither PeopleHub nor Employee Central appears, your account may need to be linked. Contact HR with your Personnel Number.

Navigate to Pay → Tax Forms → W-2
Inside the PeopleHub module

Inside PeopleHub click Pay → Tax Forms → W-2. A list of available tax years appears. Select the year you need (e.g., 2025 for your 2025 tax return).

Download the W-2 PDF
Available by January 31 — give to your tax preparer or upload to tax software

Click the year to open the PDF. Download and save immediately. Use it to file your federal and state income taxes or give it directly to your tax preparer.

⚠ W-2 Missing After January 31? (1) Verify you worked for Compass in that tax year  (2) Call HR Helpdesk at 1-877-311-4747  (3) Ask HR if a paper copy was mailed to your address on file — if your address changed, it may have gone to the old address.

Update Tax Withholding (W-4) Inside PeopleHub
Adjust federal/state deductions per paycheck

PeopleHub → Actions → Federal & State Withholding Taxes. Update your W-4 to increase or reduce the amount withheld. Changes apply from today — backdating is not allowed.

💡Update your W-4 after any major life event: marriage, new child, second job, divorce. This can reduce the amount owed at tax time or increase your take-home pay each period.

06 — Profile & Benefits

Managing Your Profile, Benefits & Direct Deposit

Outdated contact info is the number one reason employees miss payroll notifications, benefit confirmations, and reset emails.

PeopleHub → Update My Info → Personal Information
  • Home address (for W-2 mailing and all HR communications)
  • Personal phone number (primary only — one per profile)
  • Personal email address (primary only — company email cannot be changed by you)
  • Preferred name (legal name change requires HR documentation)
Date must be today or future. Backdating changes is not permitted. Update your address any time you move — a wrong address means your W-2 paper copy goes to the wrong location.

Add Emergency Contacts
PeopleHub → Personal Information → Emergency Contact

Add names, relationships, phone numbers, and email addresses. Multiple contacts are supported. This is used by HR and site management if an on-site incident occurs.

Update Direct Deposit
The one action your manager cannot do for you

PeopleHub → Pay → Direct Deposit. Add a new bank account, change your primary account, or split deposits across multiple accounts. Only you or HR can make this change — managers cannot.

💡Changes take 1–2 pay cycles to activate. Your old account receives deposits during the transition period.

View Health, Dental, Vision & 401(k)
Benefits tab on the main CAP dashboard

  • Life insurance and other elected benefits
Open Enrollment: Benefit elections can only be changed during annual Open Enrollment or within 30 days of a qualifying life event (marriage, divorce, new dependent). Outside these windows, most elections are locked.

07 — Password Reset

Fast Password Reset When You’re Locked Out

Three reset paths depending on your situation. Use the correct one to avoid wasting time.

Know security question answer → click Forgot Password, answer question, follow email link.

Access to registered email → click Login Assistance, select email reset, check inbox.

Forgot both → use Reset Account link OR call HR Helpdesk: 1-877-311-4747.

At ess.compassassociate.com, look for “Forgot Password?” or “Login Assistance” below the login button. Both paths lead to the same reset process.

Enter Your Username
Active vs. separated employee — different inputs

Active employees: enter Personnel Number and click Next.
Separated employees (left Compass): enter personal email address or click “Recover your Login ID”.

Answer Security Question
Answers are case-sensitive and must match exactly

Answer exactly as typed during registration — capitalization matters. If you cannot remember:

  • Click “Reset Account” instead (different link on the same page)
  • Call 1-877-311-4747 and HR can manually reset it
💡Too many wrong security answers can lock the reset process itself. Do not guess more than twice. Call HR directly at 1-877-311-4747 — it is the fastest path when you’re truly stuck.

Create New Password and Log In
Wait 2–3 minutes after reset before attempting login

Open the reset email link. Create a new password. Then wait 2–3 minutes before logging in — the system syncs changes across CAP, ESS Mobility, and OMS and this takes a moment.

Password Rules: Minimum 8 characters · Must include letters and numbers · Cannot reuse last 5 passwords · Expires approximately every 90 days for some accounts

These are the most common issues, sorted by frequency. Check here before calling HR.

“Invalid Username or Password” Error
Most common issue — fix in under 60 seconds
  • Check Caps Lock — passwords are case-sensitive
  • Clear saved/autofill passwords and retype manually from scratch
  • Confirm you’re using Personnel Number, not your personal email
  • Try the Compass Network ID format: 12345678@compassassociate.com
  • Try a different browser (Chrome is most compatible)
Stop after 4 failed attempts. Five failed attempts locks your account for 30 minutes or permanently until HR unlocks it. Use the password reset path instead.

Visit your HR office in person with your Personnel Number. Most sites can unlock same-day or within the hour.

Security Tips Most Employees Skip

CAP holds your pay data, partial SSN, and bank routing information. Protect it like your bank app.

✅ Always Do These

  • Log out on any shared or public computer
  • Use a unique password not used on any other site
  • Keep your registered personal email accessible and current
  • Bookmark the official URL — only use that link
  • Update security question answers periodically

🚫 Never Do These

  • Share login credentials with coworkers or managers
  • Save passwords on public or shared devices
  • Log in via links from texts or social media
  • Use Compass credentials on third-party “helper” websites
  • Ignore security question setup during registration
Avoid Third-Party Sites Many unofficial sites appear in Google results claiming to offer Compass login support. Only use compassassociate.com, ess.compassassociate.com, and compassmanager.com — all three are official Compass Group domains. Any other site asking for your CAP credentials is a risk.

The questions HR and the helpdesk receive most — answered clearly and completely.

QWhat is my username for the Compass Associate Portal?

Your username is your Personnel Number (employee ID) — for example 123456. Some employees with a Compass Network ID use the email format: 90000009@compassassociate.com. If unsure, ask your on-site HR manager.

QI left Compass Group. Can I still access my W-2 and paystubs?

Yes. Separated (former) employees can still access W-2 forms and paystubs. On the Login Assistance page, select “Separated Employee” and use your personal email address to recover access. If you have trouble, call 1-877-311-4747. Always use a personal email during registration — not a work email — for exactly this reason.

QWhen is my W-2 available and what if it contains an error?

W-2s for the prior tax year are available by January 31. If your W-2 has an error — wrong name, wrong SSN, or incorrect earnings — contact HR immediately at 1-877-311-4747 with your Personnel Number and the specific discrepancy. Do not file taxes with an incorrect W-2. A corrected W-2C will be issued.

QIs there a Compass Associate mobile app?

Yes. The ESS Mobility portal at ess.compassassociate.com works on any smartphone browser. A native app is also available — search “Compass Associate” in the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android). Use the same Personnel Number and password as the web portal.

QWhat’s the difference between CAP, ESS Mobility, OMS, and PeopleHub?

CAP (Compass Associate Portal) — Main portal for all hourly associates. Login at compassassociate.com.

ESS Mobility — Mobile-optimized version of CAP. Same credentials. Access at ess.compassassociate.com.

OMS (Owner’s Management Suite) — Managers and supervisors only. Used for scheduling, labor management. Requires Compass Network ID.

PeopleHub — A module inside CAP for personal info, tax forms, direct deposit, and benefits. Accessed via a tile on your CAP dashboard.

QCan my manager access or change my personal information in CAP?

Managers can complete most self-service tasks on an associate’s behalf — except direct deposit changes, which must be done by the employee or HR. Biographical information and national ID are viewable only by you and HR. Some payment information is also restricted to employee + HR access only.
